Misbourne Area Youth
Risk assessment policy
The Management Committee and Trustees of Misbourne Area Youth (MAY) recognise that youth activities, programmes and the premises in which they take place have to be as safe as is reasonably possible. This includes identifying hazards and quantifying associated risks.
MAY will:
- Identify the risk assessments to be undertaken and delegate responsibility of carrying out these assessments to the Youth Leaders. Once risk assessments have been completed, preventative measures should be evaluated and improved, if necessary.
- Make sure all staff are trained appropriately
- Make sure risk assessments are written down and
- that risk assessments for normal session activities are reviewed annually
- Make sure that improvements to activities/event/trips are made when needed
The delegated person will make sure that:
- Risk assessments for normal youth cafe activities are carried out at regular intervals and for all new activities.
- Completed assessments are stored in the Health and Safety file
- Staffing ratios of leaders to young people are adequate
i.e. 1:15 – When the element of risk is similar to that encountered in everyday life
1:8 – For all trips
1:6 – For children under 10 years, or groups with special needs
- That DBS checks are in place for all staff over the age of 16 yrs
An Accident/Incident Book will be kept, which will be filled in when an accident/incident occurs and, if appropriate, statements taken from witnesses.

HAZARD – Anything that can cause harm
RISK – The chances, high or low, someone will be harmed by a hazard
